U.S. Markets

In the United States, less than 1% of fresh food is purchased directly from farmers. The majority comes from chains and big box stores which is a reflection of our culture to want things big, fast and cheap. But some autumn weekend, take the family to a local farmers’ market and you’ll taste what fresh is supposed to taste like.

1 Inside the Grand Central Market in Los Angeles, California

When you walk through the door of the Grand Central Market you’ll immediately hear the buzz of people bargaining with produce vendors, ordering lunch at a deli counter, or talking with friends as they navigate the narrow aisles. Since 1917, these 30,000 square feet of bustling commerce have been housed in the Homer Laughlin Building. It was built in 1896 and, during the 1920s, its famous tenant was Frank Lloyd Wright.

6 Pumpkins at Fairhaven Farm in South Haven, Minnesota

Fairhaven Farm makes a delightful family outing in mid-October. This picturesque Yankee barn was built in the 1860s and once was a stage coach stop. In 1985, Marsha Anklam began her dream by purchasing this 50 acre property in the heart of Minnesota. Then she and David Macgregor slowly converted it into a fruit farm. This is a popular venue during autumn weekends to pick-your-own apples, pumpkins and gourds followed by a horse-drawn hayride.
