16 Winged Lion of St. Mark in Perast, Montenegro

Much of the architecture of Persast reflects when it was ruled by the Republic of Venice from 1420 until 1797. A classic example is this Winged Lion of St. Mark above the broken pediment of St. Mark’s Church. This represents Mark the Evangelist, the church’s namesake. But it also was on the Republic’s flag and coat of arms. To this day it is still used as the symbol for Veneto region and its capital city of Venice.
