In 1955, Jonas Salk proved that he had successful developed a polio vaccine that would soon end the crippling epidemic. Five years later, he founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla. Today, it is a prestigious campus for scientific research that focuses on molecular biology, neurosciences and plant biology. Among the diseases they hope to cure are cancer, AIDS, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
