Joseph Reed admitted his design was inspired by the Italian Renaissance style of Il Duomo di Firenze (Florence Cathedral). This prolific, 19th century Englishman was equally comfortable with many types of architectural designs. Among his local credits are the Melbourne Town Hall in the Second Empire style and the Neoclassical look of the State Library of Victoria.
