6 Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy

In 1591, a wooden bridge that repeatedly collapsed was replaced by the Rialto Bridge. This white stone treasure of Venice is located at roughly the midpoint of the Grand Canal. For three hundred years, it served as the only footbridge across the city’s main waterway. Notice the portico containing merchant shops. Interestingly, a design for this bridge by Michelangelo was rejected.
