President Jose Eloy Alfaro Delgado Mosaic in Public Square in Montecristi, Ecuador

In a public square next to the Basílica de Santísima Virgen de Monserrat Catholic church is this elaborate mosaic of Jose Eloy Alfaro Delgado in Montecristi, Ecuador, where he was born in 1842. He was a leader of bitter civil wars during the late 19th century. Then he became a two-term President of the Republic of Equator after winning the 1895 Liberal Revolution. Despite his dictator style, he implemented several advances including a national railroad. In 1912, after several political skirmishes, he was arrested and later murdered by a street crowd.
