The calm water in the foreground used to be called Lake Mabel. In 1913, a passageway for small boats was dredged from the New River to the Atlantic. Then, in 1928, the mouth of the harbor to the ocean was greatly expanded to form Port Everglades. Today, the busy seaport processes over 22 million tons of cargo and countless cruise ships. Port Everglades has been called the “World’s Top Cruise Port” by an industry publication.
