Most people associate the steel drum to the sounds of calypso in the Caribbean. This genre of music originated in Trinidad during the 17th century, but its Afro-Caribbean roots can be traced to the African slaves who worked on French sugar plantations during the 1700s. This pannist at the “On the Rocks” bar at Half Moon Cay was very talented. She had the entire tavern full of cruise ship passengers tapping their flip-flops to the beat.
