Passeig de Lluís Companys is a popular promenade starting at the Arc de Triomf and leading to Parc de la Ciutadella. The esplanades’ namesake was the President of Catalonia from 1933 until he was exiled after the Spanish Civil War (1936 – 1939). 18 months later, he was captured by the Nazis and executed by order of Spain’s dictator Francisco Franco. This walkway is illuminate by elegant lampposts. In the background are four domed cupolas of the Palace of Justice.
