The New River, which begins in the Everglades, flows through downtown Fort Lauderdale before reaching the Atlantic Ocean near Port Everglades. The Seminole Indians’ name was “Himmarshee” meaning “new water.” Today, it is an active waterway for yachts and pleasure boats. On the left is part of the Riverwalk promenade.
