Although the San Diego Society of Natural History was established in 1874, it did not take residence in its current building in Balboa Park until 1933. During World War II, the Navy converted the building into a hospital. In 2001, its space was doubled in order to properly display its collection of natural history exhibits from southern California and the Baja California Peninsula.
