Defining the center of the Parliamentary Triangle is Lake Burley Griffin. The 6.8 mile artificial lake created in 1963 was named in honor of Walter Burley Griffin. This American architect designed Canberra’s layout after it was announced in 1908 that the proposed city would become Australia’s capital. Encircling the shoreline are numerous national museums, parklands and an 18.5 mile walking and cycle path known as Lake Burley Griffin Circuit.
