‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu is the only former royal residence in the United States. It also has the distinction of being the only building with an American Florentine design. The palace was built in 1882 for David Kalākaua. He was the last king of the Hawaiian Islands until his death in 1891. Queen Lili’uokalani also ruled the Hawaiian Kingdom from here after her brother’s death. Two years later, she was dethroned and imprisoned in the palace. The monarchy officially ended in January of 1895. Since 1978, ‘Iolani Palace has been open as a museum.
