17 Historic Stranahan House on New River in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida

In 1893, Frank Stranahan arrived on the New River and soon founded a trading post with the Seminole Indians. Seven years later, he built this house for himself and his new wife Ivy. This humble beginning evolved into the New River Settlement and then a city in 1911. It was named after Fort Lauderdale. The defense and stockade was used during the Second Seminole War (also called the Florida War) from 1838 to 1842. Since 1980, the Historic Stranahan House has been a museum. This is Broward County’s oldest structure.
