Pu’uhonua o Hōnaunau is a 180 acre national park on the leeward coast of the Big Island. The waterfront property once was the royal grounds for Hawaiian chiefs. Behind the coconut palm trees is the Great Wall. This former protection of the royal compound is 10 feet tall and 17 feet thick. The defense was built around 1550 without the use of mortar. In the foreground is Keone’ele Cove.
