In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, is the 19th century Mariamman Temple. She is the Hindu goddess of fertility, rain and the cure for heat-based diseases. Above the gopuram (rectangular tower entrance) and inside the main temple are colorful, ornate carvings and statues (called murtis) of similar deities, including Bhuavaneswari, the all-powerful Queen of the Universe. After the take-over of South Vietnam in 1975, the temple was converted into a joss (incense) stick factory, but is once again an active Mandira (Hindu place of worship).
