In 1904, Tampa conducted its first Gasparilla parade which celebrated the legend of a swashbuckling pirate named José Gasper and his crew who terrorized the local seas during the late 1700s and early 1800s. Since then it has grown into an annual festival that attracts over one million people. This costume was made for the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla around 1950. It is one of several historic buccaneer outfits on display at the Henry B. Plant Museum.
