The Old City of Jerusalem consists of four neighborhoods called quarters. They are the Jewish, Armenian, Christian and Muslim Quarters. They were created in the 19th century by ethnicity of the residents. That demarcation has since blurred. While exploring the labyrinth, it is hard to tell when you are leaving one quarter and entering another. Signs like this help. But it really doesn’t make much difference to the casual tourist.
