After Hongkong and Shanghai Bank was founded in 1865, the financial institution quickly expanded across Asia Pacific. Japan’s first branch opened at Yokohama in 1866 and in Nagasaki in 1896. This neoclassical building by architect Kikutaro Shimoda was finished in 1904 and closed in 1931. The former HSBC office is a historic landmark and been a museum since 2014. The first floor recreates the bank. The second floor tells the story of Sun Yat-sen, the head of the Chinese Revolution and founder of the Republic of China in 1911.
