The Monument to the Discoveries, known as Padrão dos Descobrimentos, stands nearly 171 feet tall along the Tagus River in Lisbon, Portugal. It’s a tribute to the Age of Discovery when the Portuguese and Spanish, and later other European countries, raced to explore, navigate and claim unchartered continents during the 15 through 17th centuries. At the front of the ship’s bow is Henry the Navigator. Behind him are 32 statues of famous people who contributed to Portugal’s navigational successes.
