At The China Gate, a decorative paifang at the entrance to Chinatown, she skidded to a stop. Chinatown began in 1871 and now spans 20 square blocks, the largest along the East Coast. Chinese artisans created the 40-foot-high Chinatown Friendship Gate in 1985. The design reflects symbols, creatures and graphics from the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1912) dynasties.
