If you walk into a coffeeshop in Amsterdam, do not expect to find a Dutch version of Starbucks. On the menu will be a wide selection of cannabis products. The first one opened in the early 1970s. Today, there are about 200 coffeeshops in Amsterdam. This does not mean selling marijuana for personal use (up to five grams) is legal, it is just not punishable. You can sample your purchase inside the store. Ironically, smoking tobacco is prohibited except in a designated room.
