1 Barcelona Cathedral’s Central Spire in Ciutat Vella District in Barcelona, Spain

Construction of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia began in 1298 and was finished in 1420. This 174 foot central tower of Barcelona Cathedral was added in 1913. Notice its openwork and lacelike design. It is surrounded with pinnacles accented with decorative crockets. For a closer look, take an elevator to the top. The Cathedral’s namesake is Eulalia of Barcelona. Saint Eulalia was only 13 when she was tortured, crucified and beheaded in 303 AD for refusing to recant her Christian faith. The tomb of Barcelona’s co-patron saint rests within a marble sarcophagus. Barcelona Cathedral is located at Plaça de la Seu within the Gothic Quarter.
