The Australian Capital Territory is the country’s federal district containing national government offices and museums. Although ACT measures 880 square miles, most of its 413,000 residents live in the capital city of Canberra. The territory was formed in 1911 when New South Wales gave the inland property to the Australian government. Canberra is located about midway between Sydney and Melbourne.
