This monument near the Griffith Observatory pays tribute to six historical astronomers ranging from (right to left) Hipparchus, who lived in 125 B.C., to Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler and, not shown, Newton and finally Hershel who died in 1822. This tribute was designed by Archibald Garner in 1934 but six different artists did one sculpture. On top is an ancient astronomer tool called an armillary sphere.
