Puerto Rico was inhabited by the Taíno people before being discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Then it was colonized by the Spaniards. In 1898, it was invaded by the United States and became a territory two years later. Today it is a popular Caribbean island welcoming about four million visitors a year.
